3-Foot Putt Drill

We know we should make most of our putts from 3-feet away and in, but we don’t.  Why is that?  Sometimes we’re bothered by our $10 nassau riding on the putt, other times we’re not concentrating hard enough, and then again we can concentrate too hard at times.

Golf is a game where overthinking can hurt us.  When our emotions are caught up in the battle against the golf course, it’s often our putting that suffers most.  This drill is derived from one that Phil Mickelson does to improve his own putting—on a smaller scale.

Line up 12 golf balls surrounding a hole in a circle—you’ll have to find a hole where all the putts are relatively flat otherwise you’ll be reading putts instead of holing them as a reflex which is what we’re aiming for here.

Now, start at one ball and work your way around the circle until you have reached the last.  Do NOT take a practice stroke, do not read the lines, just step up and make your putting stroke once you’re aimed at the middle of the hole.  If you miss a putt, reset all the balls and start over.

I believe Phil Mickelson can make 100 of these with his eyes closed, but for this writer, 12 is a good number for me.  As you get better at holing putts you can increase this number as you go.

This will make you a better putter!
